Joint Crisis Committee

Topic: Finnish Civil War (1918)

Room #1 - Reds
Chair:
Brinda Purimetla
Director: Josh Mekala

Crisis Manager: Shrujal Ambati

Committee Description:
The Finnish civil war of 1918 was a four month long struggle for control of Finland as it was splitting from The Russian Empire and becoming an independent state. The war was fought between the Reds and the Whites.

The Reds, who were social democrats, represented the Finnish labour movement and wanted to maintain the rapid industrialization and modernization that had begun following the fall of the Russian Empire. After the control of Finland shifted to the Whites (conservatives) in 1917, the Reds sought to regain power. The growing rift deepened as both sides sought support from out of the country.

As there was no police force formally established in Finland, militarization rose. The Red Guard, the Reds’ paramilitary force, controlled the urban centers, such as cities and industry towns. However, with this militarization came a rise in conflicts. The escalation of political chaos and increasing acts of violence led to the start of the civil war.

This JCC will delve into the political, social, and national turmoil that occurred in Finland before and during the war. Delegates must collaborate to write and pass a plethora of directives, and must consider how their actions will affect the outcome of the war and the future of Finland’s people and government. They must also consider what the opposing side (the Whites) are trying to accomplish as conservatives looking to maintain the social order that was established under the Russian Empire.

Finland must be established as a progressive country in order for it to survive in a changing world, and the Reds must ensure that this happens.

Room #2 - Whites
Chair:
Izam Karukappadath
Director: Gaby Michel
Crisis Manager: Shrujal Ambati

Committee Description:
The Finnish civil war of 1918 was a four month long struggle for control of Finland as it was splitting from The Russian Empire and becoming an independent state. The war was fought between the Reds and the Whites.

Prior to World War One, Finland had undergone rapid population growth, and an upswing in industrialism had occurred. That change, however, resulted in a shaky process of democratization, and with the loss of Russian influence post-WW1, a power vacuum opened in Finland. The coming struggle for dominance, between the conservatives and the labor movement, is sure to be a major political issue in both Finland and the region.

This JCC will delve into the political, social, and national turmoil that occurred in Finland before and during the war. Delegates must collaborate to write and pass a plethora of directives, and must consider how their actions will affect the outcome of the war and the future of Finland’s people and government. They must also consider what the opposing side (the Reds) are trying to accomplish as radicals looking to threaten the social order that was established under the Russian Empire.

The Reds, supplied by Soviet Russia, are attempting to stage a takeover of Finland, in the name of the labor movements. The Whites, however, have chosen to fight back. It is up to you delegates to solve this crisis, to prevent the spread of the labour movement, and to prove to Europe’s powers that Finland has what it takes to be a force in its own right.

Finland must retain its traditional values that have made it thrive for such a long time, and the Reds must ensure that this happens.
